OEN March PubTalk: Understanding the Funding Ecosystem for Scaling Startups

PubTalks are back! OEN’s flagship networking and learning events were a staple pre-COVID, and we can’t wait to see you all again.

New this year: The networking + pitches + panel format made famous by the original PubTalks will be back, but with a twist. Instead of being at the same location every month, Portland PubTalks will bounce to different parts of the city, giving you the chance to explore new places, support a diversity of local co-working spaces and bar/restaurant venues, appeal to a broader array of tastes, and foster fresh thinking and new ideas. Change is good!

First up: we’ll gather at the openHAUS coworking space in NE Portland on March 9th. Stoel Rives partner and OEN Board Member Mary Hull will moderate a conversation with OEN Awardees Tisson Matthew of Skypoint, Josh Engelbrecht of Toolbelt, and Allie Magyar, founder of Hubb and now Chief Product Officer at Notified.

All three of these founders have led their teams to transformational success in the last two years. The topic for the evening is Exploring the Funding Landscape for Scaling Startups, but we’ll let you in on a secret… that’s just the beginning. Yes, they’ll each talk about how they resourced their company’s growth, which will be hugely informative for anyone with a big vision, but they’ve also each solved a million other problems – recruiting and retaining top talent, adapting to a rapidly changing environment in real time and taking care of their teams in the process, managing their own mental health, and much more. It’s bound to be a tremendous conversation.

Plus, there will be pitches! Come out and cheer for founder Dan Coe as he introduces Rally.

Panelists

Tisson Mathew

Founder & CEO, SkyPoint Cloud

Tisson Mathew is CEO and Founder of SkyPoint Cloud, a privacy-first customer data platform that enables consumer and healthcare brands to unlock deeper, more meaningful relationships with their customers and patients. Mathew brings years of entrepreneurial, data- and technology-based experience in health care, e-commerce and consumer retail. Before founding SkyPoint Cloud, he was Chief Technology Officer at Alignment Healthcare and, prior to that, at Cambia Health Solutions. He holds four U.S. patents, and a Master of Science in computer science and engineering from Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR.

Allie Magyar

Founder & CEO, Hubb

Since launching in 2015, Hubb has become the event industry’s technology pacesetter. We’re on top for three reasons: We believe in the power of events to drive business. We have deep event-management chops to understand the needs of our event manager heroes. Most importantly, we continually push the boundaries of how technology can help event managers. At Hubb, we are propelling the event management industry forward into the future. Whatever it is, at Hubb it all comes together as a great place to work. And to be, well, you.

Josh Engelbrecht

CEO, ToolBelt

Joshua Engelbrecht came out of the homebuilding industry, so unlike many mobile app entrepreneurs, he wasn’t trying to make the next Uber for X, or Tinder for Y, without knowing his audience.

ToolBelt, which launched in 2019, is a two-sided marketplace. It’s designed for contractors to find tradespeople for upcoming projects. It works in reverse for tradespeople to find work. In May 2021, it raised $2.5 million in a Series Seed 2 round, led by HR Tech Investments, a subsidiary of Recruit Holdings Co. Ltd., and an affiliate of the job board Indeed.
