OEN Member Spotlight - Stephen Peters of OpenSourcery

Q. Name/Name of company
A. OpenSourcery

Q.
How long has your product/service/company been in the market?
A. We have helped small businesses, nonprofits and sustainable industries since 2004. Most of our developers and engineers have been in the business for many years before the start of OpenSourcery.

Q. How did you determine need for product/service (or why do anticipate a need)?
A. We've been seeing a shift toward open source technology for years, but we believe this is just the tip of the iceberg. We realized that there's a tremendous need for open source software in industries that were formerly locked into proprietary relationships.

Q. Why did you choose the Portland (or Oregon) area to start your business?
A. Portland is truly the center of activity for open source software development.

Q. What are your impressions of the entrepreneurial community in Portland (or Oregon)?
A. It's an impressive lot.

Q. How would you like to see it grow/change?
A. Portland continues to draw talent from around the world. The city could use a more distinct international presence, and we hope that movement has already begun.

Q. How are you involved in the community and how has it helped shape your business?
A. We support the open source community both through financial contributions and by producing code that we give back to the development community. We've seen a blossoming of events in the area. Members of our team constantly participate in or attend as many gatherings as possible.

Q. What are your favorite websites/magazines/events that you read/attend to keep yourself informed about the business community/your specific market?
A. Silicone Florist, ecopreneurist, Legion of Tech

Q.
Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Always do what you love. If you're serious about starting your own business, you must be willing to pour everything into it.
